TAXONOMIC STUDY OF TEN MORE SPECIES OF COSMARIUM FROM NORTH-EASTERN AREAS OF PAKISTAN

Abstract: Ten more species of the algal genus Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (phylum Volvophycota Shameel) were collected from different freshwater habitats in Azad Kashmir as well as provinces of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa of Pakistan during April 2004 and September 2006. They were collected mainly in spring and summer, only a few collections were made during autumn and winter. The specimens were identified and described for the first time from their area of collection. Among these species, C. margasitatium (Boldt) West et West, C. nymannianum Grunow in Robenhorst, C. polygonum (Nägeli) Archer in Pritchard and C. pseudomeneghinii Foster are being reported for the first time from Pakistan.
