Abstract

The present experiment was conducted to indicate the variability of some morphological characters of Fagus sylvatica depending on location and exposure in Oltenia region, Romania. The adaptation of beech at the edge of the distribution is essential in the context of the current climatic conditions and the species proves to have large ecological plasticity. The analysis of some morphological characters established that in this region, placed in the interfluve Jiu-Danube rivers, within the arboretum it can be found both the infrataxon F. sylvatica ssp. sylvatica and F. sylvatica ssp. moesiaca. The altitude is an important factor in the presence of one or the other of the subspecies within the studied phytocoenoses, we discovered these species beginning to 90 until 1250 meters in stands of the hilly area and also in some stands in the plains area, where their presence was reported. The results highlight the fact that in the researched locations the variability of characters depends on water deficit and exposure, but its tolerance is increasing and further physiological studies will emphasize the compatibility and plasticity of these in response to current climate change
