Muhammad Moazzam
Abstract
Seaweeds collected from offshore waters of Churna Island (64 m depth) during FAO/NORAD Fisheries Research Vessel “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” 2010 were reported. Green algae Avrainvillea nigricans Decaisne 1842 (Family Dichotomosiphonaceae) and coralline algae Peyssonnelia obscura Weber-van Bosse 1921 (Family Peyssonneliaceae) were reported for the first time from Pakistan coast. Fronds of green algae (Halimeda cuneata Hering 1846) and four species of red algae were found attached to pieces of hard rocks dredged from the area. These include Haloplegma anweri Shameel and Nizamuddin, 1973, Calliblepharis fimbriata (Greville, 1830) Kützing, 1843, Claudea elegans Lamouroux, 1813, Coelarthrum opuntia (Endlicher, 1843) Børgesen, 1937. This is for the first time marine algae from deeper offshore waters of Pakistan are reported.
