Abstract
ABSTRACT
An experiment “Effect of grafting methods and different rootstocks on growth and yield of cucumber” was conducted at Ornamental Nursery, Department of Horticulture, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar during 2019. The experiment was carried out under Randomized Complete Block Design comprised of two factors, replicated three times. One factor was grafting methods (Hole Insertion Grafting and Tongue Approach Grafting) and the other factor was different rootstocks Pumpkin (cv. Durga), Squash (cv. Long Special) and Cucumber (cv. Summer Green). The statistically analyzed data indicated that grafting methods and different rootstocks significantly affected the growth and yield related parameters of cucumber cv. Beit alpha. Among the grafting methods, the highest graft success (70 %), maximum plant height (401.0 cm), number of leaves plant-1 (43), days to first flowering (46), minimum days to first harvest (65), maximum number of branches (13), stem diameter (1.59 cm), minimum male to female flower ratio (3.43), maximum fruit length (16.7 cm), fruit weight (183.2 g), number of fruit plant-1 (11.44) and total yield (19.3 tons ha-1) were observed in plants grafted through hole insertion grafting method. In case of different rootstocks, maximum plant height (407.7 cm), number of leaves plant-1 (47), maximum days to first flowering (46), maximum days to first harvest (67), number of branches plant-1 (13), stem diameter (1.67 cm), minimum male to female flower ratio (3.00), maximum fruit length (17.3 cm), fruit weight (189.1 g), number of fruit plant-1 (12.33) and highest total yield (21.1tons ha-1) were observed in plants grafted onto pumpkin rootstock. It was evident from the analyzed data that hole insertion grafting method and pumpkin rootstock enhanced the growth and yield contributing parameters of cucumber cv. Beit alpha. Therefore, hole insertion grafting method and pumpkin rootstock are recommended for attaining best growth and yield of cucumber under agro climatic conditions of Peshawar.
