Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study was to perceive the effect of C. longa supplement on the blood glucose and albumin levels, and hepatoprotective action after giving 3 g C. longa daily for 60 days in 3 divided doses. Material and Methods: It was prospective cohort study, conducted at tertiary care hospital. Ninety subjects divided into 2 groups of 45 each control and treated. Control group was given antidiabetic agent without C. longa supplement and treatment group was given C. longa supplement along with prescribed antidiabetic medicine. Blood sample of all the patients were collected by venous puncture to measure random blood sugar, albumin level, ALT and AST at the start of the study before the administration of C. longa L; capsule followed by 60 days after C. longa supplementation. All the results were analyzed by using SPSS 20 version. The values were expressed as mean and standard error to the mean. Results: A highly significant change in random blood sugar level of treated group was observed which received glimepiride; metformin and C. longa capsule i.e. 195.73 ± 16.34 mg/dl after 60 days as compared to 264.53 ± 19.69 mg/dl for control group which received glimepiride and metformin. There was no significant change in the levels of albumin, ALT and AST as compared to control group thus shows no hepatotoxicity of C. longa. Conclusion: It may be concluded that C. longa extract capsule as a supplement is safe and significantly reduce the blood glucose level in diabetic patients.
