EUPHORBIA COTINIFOLIA L. AND ROSA INDICA L . AS SUITABLE FLOATING WETLAND SPECIES FOR POLLUTION MITIGATION IN TEXTILE AND LEATHER EFFLUENTS

Abstract
The main objective of this research was to find out suitable floating wetland species for treatment of wastewater in Hudiara drain, Lahore containing significant industrial effluents. The research served as a comprehensive guideline for facilitating wastewater treatment through phytoremediation in leather and textile SMEs in Pakistan. The following research aimed at identification of indigenous wetland plant species to be used for treating industrial wastewater in context of heavy metals and for identification of parameters by these species to remove heavy metals efficiently from the wastewater. Various morphological parameters including fresh and dry weight analysis, estimation of chlorophyll content and atomic absorption spectroscopic analysis reported that among all the treated plants including iris, money plant, water cress, only red spurge (Euphorbia cotinifolia) and roses (Rosa sp.) accumulated significant amount of Pb, Cd and Cu in their aerial parts in floating wetlands and therefore, their phytoremediation potential can be used to treat industrial wastewater. This work is another step towards reporting roses and red spurge as potential species to withstand higher concentrations of Pb and therefore to be recommended for treatment of industrial wastewater.
