Bilal Ahmad
Abstract

Sugarcane is one of the most widely cultivated and farmed crops in the history of agriculture and has been serving human beings for centuries. As the economic development of the world has progressed the usage and demand of the cultivation of sugarcane has been increasing and has been recognized as a primary tool of development to the economy of agricultural countries. Pakistan is a developing country and drives significant amount of revenue from its agricultural sector. In Pakistan, agricultural sector is considered to be the basic sector of Pakistan. The contribution of agricultural sector in the gross GDP of Pakistan is quite encouraging and it also provides employment opportunities for a huge population of the country. The importance of agricultural sector can also be made evident through the fact that the livelihood of most of the rural population depends upon agriculture. There are various roles of agricultural sector in the overall economy of the country such as food security, reduction in poverty, economic growth and development and industrial revolution and these roles are more specifically related to the developing countries. Only 10% of the sugarcane is being produced by KPK in Pakistan. Although a decline has been observed in the production of sugarcane in Pakistan, still the demand of sugarcane is quite high both in domestic and international markets. In KPK, the trend is to plant the sugarcane crops in spring season and after planting it, it is harvested after almost eight to nine months However, in KPK, the yield of sugarcane per hectare is quite low. The major reasons behind this low yield include the shortage of water resources, improper fertilizer and pesticide usage and absence of the sugarcane varieties providing higher yields. In the present study, the researcher has opted to use the quantitative research method because this study is based on the formation of hypotheses on the basis of past literature and data is collected in numeric form against variables in a time series for secondary data analysis and from a questionnaire-based survey for the collection of primary data in terms of numeric facts and figure which a researcher can easily analyze through different statistical analyses techniques. In the present study a regression-based model is being developed for evaluate the associations prevalent for the secondary data analysis. The OLS technique was used for the evaluation of the dependencies among the variables. The study is using the ordinary least squares method, the OLS technique was deemed suitable for application based upon the objectives and nature of the data. OLS or ordinary least squares is statistical regression method that is used for estimating the relationships among a dependent and one or more independent variables. The method is operationalized through the estimation of the associations prevalent among the variables by minimizing the difference between the sum of squares between the observed and predicted values of the dependent variable. Apart from that primary data were also collected through questionnaires and analysed.
