Abstract

Questionnaire was designed to collect the information regarding the use of antidiarrheal plants from the study area. Eight highly used antidiarrheal plants were selected for comparative phytochemical screening, antioxidant and antibacterial potential. Highly used plants were Mentha longifolia, Mentha arvensis, Berginia ciliata, Plantago lanceolata, Allium cepa, Allium sativum, Solanum nigrum and Zanthoxylum alatum. A preliminary phytochemical analysis of the above mentioned plants extract in different solvents was performed to reveal the presence of different constituents like flavonoids, tannins, saponins glycosides, phenolics, alkaloids, and terpenoids. These constituents showed different results in different solvents.  The total Phenols were also determined in the extracts of these plants which showed a range from the highest value recorded in ethanol extract of Berginia ciliata (263.13) and Solanum nigrum (263.81) and least recorded value was observed in distilled water extract of Allium cepa (5.219) and Allium sativum (5.4132). Highest antioxidant activity was shown by methanolic extract of Solanum nigrum (324.85) and lowest antioxidant value was depicted by acetone extract of Allium cepa (746.26).  The maximum IC50 value was recorded in acetone extract of Alium cepa (746.26), while the minimum one was recorded in methanolic extract of Solanum nigrum (324.85). ). Antibacterial potential of antidiarrheal plants was screened out by disc diffusion method against Achromobacter xyloxidans (20mm) in methanolic solvent and Bacillus cereus (18mm) in acetone extract. Berginia ciliata exhibited the highest zone of inhibition in ethanol (20mm) and Allium sativum exposed the highest zone of inhibition (18mm) in aqueous solvent
