Comparative Effect of Mineral Phosphorus Sources and Levels on the Yield and Quality of Nicotiana tobacum
Muhammad Tariq
Abstract
The impact of different mineral phosphorus (P) fertilizers on the bio-availability of P in calcareous soils is conflicting in literature. Therefore, this field expeiment was design to study the comparative effect of different P levels (0, 75, 100 and 125 kg P2O5 ha-1) supplied as different mineral fertilizers [single super phosphate (SSP), triple super phosphate (TSP), di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and nitrophos (NP)] on the yield and qulaity of tabacco. Leaf area (826.7 cm2), number of leaves (24), green leaf weight (4741 kg ha-1), cured leaf weight (2365 kg ha-1) and grand index (86%) of tobacco were significantly improved with application of DAP at the rate 100 kg P2O5 ha-1. Moreover, nicotine (2.0 %) and sugar (20.4 %) contents were considerably increased, and chloride (0.48 %) content was decreased at 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 as DAP. Leaf P concentration (0.13 %) and agronomic efficiency were also higher at 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 applied as DAP. Among the sources the promising effect in terms of yield, quality and agronomic efficiency were observed in the order of DAP>SSP>TSP>NP. Therefore, for the better growth and quality tobacco application of 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 as DAP is recomended under calcarious soils.
