Abstract
Nanotechnology is an effective, novel tool, a promising application in agriculture field at the nanoscale level. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticle by using pyrethrum plant leaves is an effective and ecofriendly production method. The melon fly is one of the major important pests of cucurbits causing severe damage to young growing vegetables. The present study was carried to evaluate the insecticidal activity of leaf aqueous extract of pyrethrum plant- base synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against melon fly by foliar application during early growth of bitter gourd fruit. The enhanced antioxidant level in treated fruits accompanied by a significantly reduced rate of infestation and increased fruit yield. The treated fruits of bitter gourd showed significantly higher levels of antioxidants and phenolic acids thus showing their close association with the resistance mechanism in fruits. It was evident that resistance to melon fly in bitter gourd could be achieved by foliar application of silver nanoparticles to fruits at a time when the fruits are most susceptible to infestation.
