ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICRIBIAL POTENTIAL OF IDENTIFIED ESSENTIAL OILS OF BERBERIS BALUCHISTANICA
Rukhsana Taj
Abstract
In Balochistan biotechnological potential of medicinal plant has not been widely investigated. Thus, searching of compounds for emergent novel medications screening programs are vital of medicinal plants. The purpose of current study was to determine the chemical profile and to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of essential oil (EO) of Berberis baluchistanica. The chemical characterized was done by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant potential was evaluated by free radical scavenging DPPH method. Antifungal activity was evaluated by agar well and disc diffusion methods. The antibacterial screening was assessed against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria by disc diffusion technique and determining minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results of GC-MS examination shown the presence of sixteen constituents making 99.9% of complete oil. EO exhibited substantial effect against fungal strain Alternaria alternate, while showed remarkable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. These results show that B. baluchastanica based EO have the potential to be evaluated in clinical applications and pharmaceutical industries as antimicrobial agent in treatment of various ailments. It can be used as preservative agent in foodstuff as natural replacement of harmful synthetic antioxidant.
