RELATIONSHIP OF SPECIFIC LEAF AREA (SLA) AND GROWTH CONDITIONS FOR THREATENED TREES IN INDONESIAN HIGHLANDS EX-SITU CONSERVATION AREA: A CASE STUDY OF THE CIBODAS BOTANICAL GARD

Abstract
Abstract
Many of Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG) tree collections are threatened exotic species that have significant conservation values and need particular consideration for its tree conservation management and invasiveness risk factor as CBG living collections. The invasiveness risk factor is important because CBG is located next to native protected forest area of Gede Pangrango National Park (GPNP). The aim of this study are: a) to examine the ecophysiological and morphometric parameter of threatened tree species of CBG, b) to examine the correlation between ecophysiological traits of threatened exotic tree collection of CBG with the tree morphometric characteristics that indicate tree condition, and c) to examine specific leaf area (SLA) as ecophysiological traits and morphometric variables that differentiate native from exotic threatened tree species in CBG. We sampled 12 threatened exotic tree species of CBG collection that consist of 27 sampled individual trees in total. We also sampled 16 threatened native tree species that is taxonomically similar at least for genus or family level, that consist of 31 individual trees. The Pearson correlation analysis were conducted to examine the correlation between SLA and morphometric characters. In general, the SLA value of native species were relatively larger than exotic species. These SLA value indicates relatively low invasive potential from these exotic threatened tree of CBG collection. The strongest positive correlation were exist between SLA and PCR and the strongest negative correlation were between SLA and S. This result indicate that SLA as ecophysiological factor also indicate the growth pattern and strategy of these studied threatened tree species at CBG.
