COMPARAITIVE STUDIES ON CITRIC ACID PRODUCTION BY A. niger AND A. tubingensis USING KITCHEN WASTE AS SUBSTRATES AS A SOURCE OF CARBON

Abstract
Exploring more productive strains and valorization of biomass is the most crucial step in promoting economically viable and useful industrial products such citric acid etc. Thus, present work was aimed to assess the potential of locally isolated A. tubingensis for the first time and A. niger for citric acid production. Segregated kitchen waste, crude molasses and sucrose were used as substrate. Additionally, effects of pH, carbon and nitrogen and methanol were also monitored.
Findings indicate that the highest yield i.e. 16.14g/l was produced by A. niger in fermentation media containing sucrose, 1.0% ammonium nitrate and 1.0% methanol while 13.33 g/l was produced by A .tubingensis in fermentation media containing sucrose, 1.0% ammonium nitrate and 1.0% methanol. Moreover, citric acid production by two different species of Aspergillus gave comparable yields. Addition of methanol in fermentation media gave higher yields of citric acid. Present findings demonstrated that A. tubingensis can be a potential candidate for the production of citric acid. Furthermore, kitchen waste could be a sustainable and cost effective source of substrate for citric acid production.
