Abstract
ABSTRACT
A single blind placebo controlled clinical trials were conducted in district Peshawar with an aim to evaluate the effect of olive leaves extract (OLE) on different selected blood parameters of diabetic patients. A total of 32 patients of both sexes age 40 to 60 year with type II diabetes were randomly selected and were followed for 40 days at lady reading hospital Peshawar city. Type 2 diabetic patients whose fasting glucose level >200 mg/dl and were not on insulin therapy and others chronic diseases were included and patients with not normal BMI, age <40 years and the fasting glucose level <200mg/dl as well as having tuberculosis (TB) or HIV were not enrolled in the study. All the patients enrolled were divided into four groups receiving the dose as: Group 1 (1gm of olive leaves tea),Group 2 (2gm of olive leaves tea),Group 3 (3gm of olive leaves tea) and 4th group receive simple plan water. Approximately 5 ml of blood samples was taken on day 0, 10th , 20th , 30th and 40th day. After the blood collection, blood samples were biochemically analyzed for liver function tests (LFT's) and renal function tests (RFT's) by following the standard analytical procedure of clinical biochemistry. The collected data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 2.0 for means standard deviation and frequency distribution at 5% significant level. The results shows a significant decrease in blood urea level (p<0.05) while the blood Creatinine , Bilirubin, Alanine transaminase, and Alkaline phosphate level decrease non significantly (p>0.05) with increase in olive leaves tea dose at each visit of follow up. Overall our research was in favor of olive leaves effect on renal and liver function of type II diabetic patient.
