Micromorphological characterization of selected Asteraceae species from the Peshawar region

Abstract
Detailed micromorphological characterizations of epidermal anatomy of selected twenty Asteraceae species from the Peshawar region were done under light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Different epidermic parameters including epidermis structure and types, trichomes morphology and types and stomatal morphology and types on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces were qualitative and quantitatively analyzed. A considerable variation in the shapes of the epidermis was observed on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces, mostly polygonal-shaped followed by ameboid and irregular-shaped. Most of the epidermal cells consist of a thick lobed margin wall. The micrograph of the selected Asteraceae species exhibits five main classes of trichomes on both surfaces of the epidermis. Simple conical trichome was the most common type followed by biserriate/vesicular capitates glandular trichome on both surfaces. The stomatal type hemiparacytic was the most common type in the lower epidermis (LE) while anomocytic stomata in the upper epidermis (UE). On average LE contains a higher quantity of stomata (32 per µm) compared to UE (28 per µm). On average the length of the stomatal pore in UE is larger (21 µm) than the LE surface (19 µm). The largest stomatal pore length was reported in Xanthium strumarium L. The largest guard cell length on UE was accounted for Sonchus asper (L.) Hill (39 µm). The current study indicates that qualitative and quantitative morphological variation in epidermal parameters offers countless taxonomical values for plant taxonomists to explore the examined Asteraceae species at a molecular level.
