COMPARATIVE ANATOMICAL STUDIES OF SOME SALVIA SPECIES FROM IRAQ

Abstract
The Salvia is described as the largest genus in the family of Lamiaceae. Salvia used in the pharmaceutical, medical, industrial, food and cosmetic fields. The aim of the study is to compare the anatomical features of three species of genus Salvia includes Salvia compressa, S. palaestina, and S. spinosa from Suleymaniah province-Northern Iraq. The anatomical features of the studied Salvia species were determined by cross section from root, stem, leaf, petiole, midrib and by surface section from leaf. The anatomical parts and sections were analysed and photographed, also showed as Fig.s. The anatomical results were described and compared with the other members of the Genus Salvia. Epidermal cell is single row, collenchyma in four angles of stems, and diacytic stomata observed in leaf blades of three studied species. Prismatic crystals only observed in stem and midrib of S. palaestina and S. spinosa.
