Abstract

A field study was conducted in Ramadi, Iraq, with the aim of finding local alternatives to commercial organic fertilizers by recycling household and city waste at the lowest cost and applying them to fenugreek plants with the aim of increasing their nutrient content. The experiment consisted of two factors. The first factor involved applying sheep manure at three levels: 0, 6, or 8 µg ha-1. The second factor involved spraying commercial or manufactured organic acids at three concentrations: 0.5, 1-, or 1.5-ml L-1. The control treatment has been only sprayed with distilled water. The results showed that the second level of sheep manure (6 µg ha-1) gave the highest rate of content of micro and macro nutrients in fenugreek seeds. The third level of commercial organic acid (1.5 ml L-1) gave the highest content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and zinc in the seeds. Commercial organic acid treatment had given an identical value as manufactured organic acid treatments for potassium contents in seeds. The commercial organic acid’s second level (1ml/L) had given the highest magnesium content in seeds. The manufactured organic acid’s 3rd level (1.5ml/L) gave maxiomum iron content in the seeds of fenugreek. The highest manganese content in the seeds of fenugreek had been found in the case where it is sprayed with manufactured acid’s2nd level (1ml/L). None-the-less, there have not been significant differences noticed between commercial organic acid treatments and manufactured organic acid treatments in minor and major nutrient content in the studied fenugreek seeds. Lastly, sheep manure second level and commercial organic acid third level (1.5ml/L) have given the highest micro and macro nutrient content in the seeds of fenugreek. The results of the present study have indicated that the use of organic acids and sheep manure could be one of the good ways of improving fenugreek seed nutrient contents.
