Abstract

Standardization of suitable nursery is pre-requisite for the production of quality planting stock. To improve the outplanting performance of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn., an experiment was conducted at SKUAST-K to investigate the effect of container type (polybag 150 cc, root trainer 150 cc, root trainer 250 cc and root trainer 300 cc) and growing media (garden soil, sand, cocopeat, perlite and vermiculite) on rooting and growth of rosemary by using completely randomized block design with 5×4 factorial arrangement during nursery culture. This experiment was aimed at finding better and lighter potting medium and suitable container for raising quality planting stock of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. The results have been explained on the basis of mean data at 5% confidence level, that indicated among the different growing media, rosemary cuttings raised in perlite media attained maximum rooting percentage, root number, root length, fresh and dry root weight, shoot length, collar diameter, fresh and dry shoot weight and stock quality index. However, among the containers, root trainer of volume 300cc favoured maximum rooting percentage, qualitative features of root and shoot (root number, root length, fresh and dry root weight, shoot length, collar diameter, fresh and dry shoot weight) and stock quality index. Our results demonstrated that root trainer of volume 300 cc filled with perlite potting media is an appropriate system for the cultivation of rosemary.
