Abstract

STUDY OF RESISTANTS MECHANISM OF WHEAT GENOTYPES AGAINST RHOPALOSIPHUM PADI L. (HIMEPTER: APHIDIDAE) AND THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT SOWING DATES ON YIELD COMPONENT Khadim Hussain and Shah Alam Khan Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of crop Protection Science The University of Agriculture, Peshawar-Pakistan May, 2024   ABSTRACT The current research was comprised of two experiments. In first experiment, to study the effect of different sowing dates on the population trend of wheat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi. L.) on different wheat genotypes Pirsabak-13, wadan-17 Fakhar-e-bhakkar and Ghazi. The first experiment was conducted in NDF Malakandher during 2021-2022 under RCBD (Randomized Complete Block design) with three replication, while in the second experiment study of resistants mechanism (antixenosis and tolerance) of wheat genotypes against Rhopalosiphum padi. L. under controlled condition at Department of Plant Protection the University of Agriculture Peshawar. In controlled condition, the antixenosis experiment (preferences and non-preferences) showed no significant difference among all the tested genotypes while tolerance showed significant difference. Mean proportional dry weight change (DWT) for shoots, roots and plant total, the tested wheat genotype Fakhar-e-bhakkar was significantly minimum percent dry weight change (DWT), while genotype PS-13 was showed significantly higher percent dry weight change (DWT). Significantly Fakhar-e-bhakkar genotype showed tolerance against wheat aphid among different wheat genotypes. Data regarding of overall mean numbers of aphid on tested wheat genotypes on different sowing date showed a significant difference. The highest mean population of R. padi per tiller was sustained on genotype Fakhar-e-bhakkar (45.03) and lowest mean population per tiller was recorded on genotype Pirsabak-13 (19.23). During population of R. padi. Maximum mean number of aphid (32.03 per tiller) was recorded on 3rd sowing date while minimum mean number of aphid (23.73 per tiller) recorded on 1st sowing date. Considering the yield attributes of all the tested genotypes, the highest yield (total yield, 1000-grains weight, grains per spike and spike length) was recorded in Fakhar-e-bhakkar (2917 kghaˉ¹), (46.633 gram), (42.31) and (10.31 cm) respectively, from the first sown date while the lowest was recorded in genotypes PS-13 (2342.2 kghaˉ¹), (39.45 gram) (36.09) and (9.21cm) from late sown time. Thus it is concluded from this research R. padi population was maximum in the 3rd sown and minimum aphid population was recorded in 1st sown. The genotype Fakhar-e-bhakkar was recorded comparatively resistant in field and also in controlled condition compared to other tested genotypes.
