STRESS TOLERANCE INDICES FOR GRAIN YIELD IN THE NEWLY DEVELOPED RICE POPULATIONS

Mr. Afraz Nasim
Abstract

Development of water-stress tolerant rice genotypes is imperative to ensure food security in the current global climate change era. This study was performed to assess the performance of six parental rice genotypes and their F4 cross combinations for grain yield under normal and water-stress conditions. Experimental material was grown in randomized complete block design with three replications at the University of Agriculture (UoA)-Peshawar during the rice growing season 2022. Significant (P < 0.05) differences among the environments (normal and water-stress conditions), rice genotypes and genotype × environment interaction were observed for the grain yield. Maximum grain yield plant-1 (26.7 g) was produced by cross combination Basmati-385 x PK-386 under normal conditions. F4 cross combination Basmati-385 x KS-282 manifested desirable highest stress tolerance index (1.23), mean productivity index (24.68), geometric mean productivity (24.67) and yield index (1.45) for water-stress conditions. Cross combination Swat-2 x JP-5 manifested desirable maximum yield stability index (1.31) for water-stress conditions and desirable minimum stress susceptibility index (-1.50) for water-stress conditions. Cross combinations Swat-2 x JP-5 and Basmati-385 x KS-282 were thus observed as relative water-stress tolerant genotypes.
