ANALYSIS OF VOLATILE FLORAL COMPONENTS OF EAST INDIAN ARROWROOT BY GC-MS.

Dr. Rocky Thokchom
Abstract

The inflorescence of Curcuma angustifolia Roxb. locally known as yaipal is a delicacy in Manipuri dishes. The essential oil extracted from the inflorescence was characterised by gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 42 identified constituents, comprising 73% oil. The floral extract constituted mostly sesquiterpene such as α-bergamontene, β-germacrene, β-caryophyllene, γ-elemene, β-farnesene, humulene, curzerene, petasitene, caryophyllene oxide, germacrene D, β-elemenone, germacrone and neocurdione. Presence of various secondary metabolite compounds with a majority of sesquiterpenes can be used as pharmacognostical tools.
