IMPACT OF FOLIAR APPLICATION OF ZINC AND BORON ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF CANOLA

Muhammad Awais Khan
Abstract

The experiment was carried out at Agronomy Research Farm, The University Agriculture Peshawar during winter season 2023-24. Seeds of respective variety were grown at the end of October 2023 in plot size of 3m × 3m having 5 rows 3m long and 50 cm apart. The experiment consist of two factors i.e. four zinc levels (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%) and four boron levels (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%). The study was arranged in a randomized complete block design replicated three times. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and boric acid (H3BO3) was utilized as a source of zinc and boron, respectively. Finding of the experiment showed that various levels of foliar zinc and boron significantly affected all the recorded parameters except number of plants meter-2. Zinc foliar application at the rate of 3% produced early flowers (81.5), branches plant-1 (5.0), chlorophyll a content (0.7 mg ml-1), chlorophyll b content (0.4 mg ml-1), total chlorophyll content (1.9 mg  ml-1), carotenoid content (0.9 mg ml-1), number of siliques plant-1 (253), number of seeds silique-1 (20.8), thousand seed weight (3.7 g), plant height (149.1 cm), days to physiological maturity (128.8), biological yield (4646.8kg ha-1), seed yield (1199.4kg ha-1), harvest index (25.2%) and oil content (47.5%). Regarding boron application at the rate of 2% resulted early flowers (82.5), maximum branches plant-1 (5.2), chlorophyll a content (0.8 mg ml-1), chlorophyll b content (0.3 mg ml-1), total chlorophyll content (1.1 mg ml-1), carotenoid content (0.7 mg ml-1), number of siliques plant-1 (254), number of seeds silique-1 (18.5), thousand seed weight (3.6 g), plant height (146.9 cm), days to physiological maturity (130.6), biological yield (4693.8kg ha-1), seed yield (1245.3 kg ha-1), harvest index (25.1%) and oil content (47.6%). It was concluded from our experiment that the foliar fertilization of zinc at the rate of 3% along with foliar boron at the rate of 2% performed better and produced maximum yield and yield components and recommended for cultivation of canola in Peshawar region.
