A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON ACONITUM NAPELLUS LINN AND INSIGHT STUDY OF PHARMACOLOGY, PHYTOCHEMISTRY AND TOXICOLOGY PROPERTIES

JAN ALAM
Abstract

Aconitum napellus Linn. has great traditional, medicinal, and commercial importance and every part of it is used for the treatment of several kinds of disorders such as acidity. Congestion of the head, issues related to asthma, issues related to Urination, inflammation of eyes, Liver and Spleen enlarged, Delirium, hallucinations, illusions, and various mental conditions. In this review traditional uses, phytochemistry, biological activities, and pharmacology of A. napellus were discussed. Data was collected from scientific journals and books from libraries and electronic sources. All data were searched up to June 2024. Up till now, about sixty-four (64) chemical constituents have been isolated from the different parts of the plant, which belong to different classes of natural products including alkaloids, flavonoids, and organic acids. Pharmacological studies revealed that crude extracts and pure constituents from different parts of A. napellus have possess various biological activities, including anti-diabetic, neuro shielding, antibacterial and anti-anxiety activities. Phytochemical analysis of this plant has demonstrated its high content of diterpenoid alkaloids. A. napellus is widely recognized as a toxic species and attributed to three primary toxic diterpene alkaloids: aconitine, mesaconitin, and jesaconitine among the various compounds present in the plant, aconitine is the most abundant, with significantly higher levels found in the roots and leaves. The objectives of this review are to examine the medicinal value of natural compounds which will provide a foundation for future studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of their bioactive components.
