ISOLATION, PURIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF QUERCETIN FROM ONION (Allium cepa L.)
ASMA AHMED
Abstract
Plants constitute the key component of drug in fold system of treatments so becomes a source of inspiration for many drugs. Present study was conducted for the quantification of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, metal ions and flavonoids from the bulb of three different varieties of Allium cepa L. than GC analysis was done for the analysis of fatty acids while HPLC analysis was performed for the quantification of Quercetin. Results showed that Dark pink A. cepa shows higher concentration of cellulose (17.55%) and lower concentration of oil (2.12 %) and its GC analysis showed that propionate (31.61 %) was found to be highest. The level of protein and crude fat, found in onion samples were 8.75 % and 9.9 % respectively. Macro elements were found in higher concentration in which concentration of sodium was highest (14.0 ug/ ml) while copper (0.3 ug/ ml) was found only in trace amounts. HPLC analysis of flavonoids showed that A. cepa was rich in Quercetin-3, 4 - O-diglucoside (3, 4- Qdg); Quercetin-3- O-glucoside (3-Qmg or iso quercitrin); Quercetin-4 -O-glucoside (4 - Qmg); Isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside (3-Img), Quercetin aglycone (Q); and Kaempferol (K) in which highest concentration was of Quercetin-4 - O-glucoside (4 - Qmg). Present study is useful for the purification of fatty acids and quercetin and for the formation of drugs which utilizes these phytochemicals for pharmaceutical industry.
