Abstract

Animal waste causes environmental pollution when applied to land without appropriate controls and management, whereas agronomic utilization of biogas slurry represents the best solution for its reuse. To evaluate performance of bio slurry on tomato production, experiments were conducted at Lahirirhat Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) Site, Rangpur, during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 to observe the effect of cow dung bio-slurry and poultry bio-slurry on the performance of tomato production in farmers field. To achieve these objectives, six farmers field were selected at FSRD site, Rangpur, Bangladesh. Randomized complete block design was used in experiment with four treatments replicated three times. In FSRD site, the highest fruit yield was obtained from Integrated Plant Nutrient System (IPNS) (5 t ha-1 cow dung bio-slurry) for High Yield Goal (HYG) in both the years (94.67 t ha-1 in 2008-2009 and 69.11 t ha-1 in 2009-2010) which differed significantly from other fertilizer treatments. The lowest fruit yield (70.88 t ha-1) was obtained from farmers practice in 2008-2009 and 52.11 t ha-1 in 2009-2010. In case of poultry bio-slurry, the highest fruit yield was obtained from IPNS (3 t ha-1 poultry slurry) for HYG in both the years (95.0 t ha-1 in 2008-09 and 80.22 t ha-1 in 2009-2010) which differed significantly from other fertilizer treatments. The lowest fruit yield (57.2 t ha-1) was obtained from farmers practice in 2008-09 and 55.5 t ha-1 in 2009-2010. From the economic analysis, the gross return (BDT. 473350 ha-1) and gross margin (BDT. 404810 ha-1) was obtained from cow dung bio-slurry in 2008-2009 while, the gross return (BDT.414660 ha-1) and gross margin (BDT.340580 ha-1) was recorded from cow dung bio-slurry in 2009-2010. In addition, FSRD site, the gross return (BDT. 475000 ha-1), gross margin (BDT. 403126 ha-1) was obtained from IPNS (3 t ha-1 poultry slurry) for HYG and the gross return (BDT. 481320 ha-1), gross margin (BDT. 417304 ha-1) was obtained from IPNS (3 t ha-1 poultry slurry) for HYG.
