GEOMETRICAL PROPERTIES OF APPLE INFLUENCED BY VARIETY, TREE AGE AND FRUIT POSITION IN CANOPY
Muhammad Arshad
Abstract
Influence of a few preharvest factors on geometry of apples was determined by a field sampling of 270 apple fruits from three varieties (Golden Delicious, Red Crispy, Red Delicious) belonging to three tree age groups (1-3 years old, 4-6 years old, 7-9 years old) and two fruit positions (Sun side, Shade side). Statistical analysis showed that the geometric parameters including weight (134-137 g), length (6.0-6.2 cm), width (6.5-6.7 cm), arithmetic diameter (6.2-6.5 cm), and geometric diameter (6.2-6.5 cm) were significantly (p = 0.001) varied due to three-way interaction of variety, tree age and fruit position. The volume (125-167 cm3) and thickness (6.3-6.6 cm) of the fruit were significantly (p ? 0.001) influenced by variety and the two-way interaction of tree age and fruit position while aspect ratio (0.91-0.95), sphericity (95.6-96.5%) and solid density (0.8-1.1 g cm-3) were significantly (p ? 0.001) affected by individual influence of all the three preharvest factors.
