BACILLUS CEREUS: A COMPETENT PLANT GROWTH PROMOTING BACTERIA OF SALINE SODIC FIELD
Dr. Tamoor Ul Hassan
Abstract
The effects of Bacillus cereus were investigated on wheat in the presence or absence of L-tryptophan, in a saline sodic field. An aqueous solution of tryptophan was added to the rhizosphere soil at 1 µg/L, after 8d of seeds germination with irrigated water. The survival efficiency measured as colony forming unit revealed that B. cereus was salt tolerant rhizosphere soil filtrate and in NaCl. Bio-inoculation of B. cereus significantly decreased EC, Na and Cl and contents by 35%, and increased K, NO3-N, P, and organic matter by (25%) over control. Tryptophan addition assisted the B. cereus to further decrease Na, Cl, sodium absorption ratio (SAR) and Na/K by 80%. Inoculation of B. cereus alone and with tryptophan significantly increased Proline, antioxidant enzymes, phytohormones and yield attributes. The results revealed that tryptophan addition augmented the potential of B. cereus in improving crop growth and productivity which was mediated by the salinity alleviation.
