Genome size variation in Chinese species of Allium L. is correlated with altitude

Fengling Guo
Abstract

Species in the genus Allium L. (Alliaceae) are important economic crops, and they exhibit variations in genome size and basic chromosome number. In the present study, we used flow cytometry to determine the nuclear DNA content of plants sampled from Allium populations which were collected at various altitudes ranging from 43 m to 1530 m above sea level (asl) in Hubei province, China. Our results revealed that the 2C-values of these Allium populations ranged from 15.10 to 64.65 pg, suggesting significant interspecific variation in the nuclear DNA contents. A positive correlation between genome size and altitude among these Allium species was found. The results of our study will deepen our understanding of the relationship in high altitude-dependent plants between nuclear DNA content and habitat altitude.
