ETHNOBOTANICAL EVALUATION OF SOME PLANT RESOURCES OF HAZAR NAO HILLS, DISTRICT MALAKAND, PAKISTAN

Abstract
Knowledge about plant resources of a particular area is of wide interest to scientific community and policy stakeholders to devise effective mechanisms for proper utilization of such resources. In this study, regular field surveys were conducted in the villages of Kot, Maina, Brah and Totai of Hazar Nao forest. Ethnobotanical information collected on 77 plant species revealed that 55 (71.43%) species were medicinal, 34 (44.16%) forage species, 35 (45.45%) fuel wood species, 5 (6.49%) vegetable/pot-herb species, 14 (18.18%) fruit plants, 11 (14.29%) fencing/ hedges plants, 4 (5.19%) ornamental species, timber wood species 10 (12.99%) and poisonous plants 2 (2.60%). Twelve (15.58%) species were used for making agricultural appliances, 12 (15.58%) species are used for making furniture, 10 (12.99%) are honeybee species and 12 (15.58%) species have other uses (washing utensils, roofing, thatching. handicrafts, winnowing trays, birds cages, sports, shade, walking sticks, flavoring agent and sweeping) in the study area. Majority of plants have multiple uses, and in some cases different plants have similar traditional utilities. Due to grazing and anthropogenic activities the plant resources are under high pressure.
