Water Stress Influence Leaf Morphology, Fluorescence Parameters and Bioactive Content of three Olive Cultivars
Hayet EDZIRI
Abstract
Changes in morphology, sclerophylly, chlorophyll photosynthetic parameters and total phenol and flavonoid contents were studied in leaves of three olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars Oueslati, Jarboui and Meski grown under water deficit conditions. Our results showed that there were significant differences in stomatal and trichome densities, leaf area and the relative surface of stomatal pores. On the other hand the photosynthetic parameters Fv/Fm (the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry), ΦPSII (quantum yield of electron transport at PSII) , and ETR (electron transport rate) were negatively affected in the three varieties under water deficit. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents increased in all cultivars, with Oueslati showing the highest values. The Oueslati variety could be considered as the most drought tolerant compared to Jarboui and Meski. Therefore we believe this cultivar is very promising for cultivation in semi-arid areas.
