Abstract

ABSTRACT Background and purpose In present days vegetables and fruits provided by nature are underutilized and underestimated. This is probably one of the reasons for increment in the occurrence of different diseases including neuropsychological problems. Raphanus caudatus, is one of an ignored vegetable belonging to radish plant because it is not only underutilized by the population but also the researches had not focused to identify its phytochemistry as well as pharmacological potential. The present study was designed with the aim to evaluate bioactive principles along with sedative and muscle relaxant properties of ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus in mouse model. Experimental work In the current study qualitative phytochemical analysis of ethanol exatract was carried out. Moreover sedative and muscle relaxant properties of extract was evaluated at three different doses (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) in mouse model using phenobarbitone induced sleeping time and rota rod test respectively. Results The ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus indicated the occurrence of carbohydrates, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids as well as tannins. The extract at highest tested doses i.e. 1000 mg/kg produced significant (p<0.05) sedative action. However, the extract was found to be lacking in muscle relaxant properties at any of tested dose in mice up to 60 days post treatment. Conclusion and implications The study proposes that Raphanus caudatus may possibly be used as valuable source of bioactive constituents with psychosedative properties.
