ROOT DYNAMICS BASED SCREENING FOR MOISTURE STRESS TOLERANCE IN BLACKGRAM.
M. PRAKASH
Abstract
Pulses, particularly black gram plays a vital role in providing balanced protein requirement in the diet of the people in most of the developing countries. Moisture stress is one of the major constraints in deciding the productivity and yield stability of black gram. Among the many strategies, using secondary traits like root traits for drought screening has succeeded in many crops. Hence field experiments were conducted to screen seventy three black gram genotypes based on root characters, root penetration ability and also based on gas exchange parameters. Observations on root, gas exchange parameters and biometric characters were recorded. Based on the root characters and gas exchange parameters, five lines were found to be promising. These genotypes were crossed with high yielding local adapted varieties like VBN 1, VBN 3, T 9 and ADT 9 to get F1. The F1 and F2 generations were subjected to genetic analysis considering six biometric characters. Among the hybrids, PGRU-95018 X ADT 9 performed better by recording more yield when compared to other crosses and forwarded to further generations
