PHYSIOLOGICAL GROWTH, SEX EXPRESSION AND NUTRIENT COMPOSITION OF CUCUMBER AS INFLUENCED BY MALEIC HYDRAZIDE
MD. DULAL SARKAR
Abstract
The present experiment was aimed to evaluate the effect of maleic hydrazide with the concentration of (i) Control: without maleic hydrazide (MH0); (ii) maleic hydrazide @150 ppm (MH150), maleic hydrazide @250 ppm (MH250) and (iv) maleic hydrazide @350 ppm (MH350) at the three stages of (i) Seed soaking (SS), (ii) Vegetative stage (VS) and (iii) Flowering stage (FS) on physiological growth, sex expression and nutrient composition of cucumber. Sex modification and fruit setting was enhanced by maleic hydrazide. Number of leaves, leaf area and fruit yield were also remarkably increased except plant height after plant height after maleic hydrazide application at different stages. Maleic hydrazide increased the dry biomass of fruit resulted from higher chlorophyll content in leaves transferred photosynthates to the fruit. Chlorophyll content and mineral nutrient concentration in fruits did not affected significantly by maleic hydrazide in all stages. As the effect on sex modification and yield attributes, maleic hydrazide @ 150 ppm at vegetative stage besides seed soaking treatments seem to be good choice.
