ALLELOPATHIC EFFECTS OF DOMINANT WEED SPECIES ON DIFFERENT CROP PLANTS

GHULAM MUSTAFA
Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to determine the allelopathic potential of weed species in the year 2014. In 1st laboratory experiment, plant aqueous extracts were prepared in petri dishes @ 5, 10, 20 and 30 mgL-1 of weed species namely Melilotus indica, Medicago polymorpha, Elusin indica and Fumaria indica and checked their effects on germination percentage, radical and hypocotyl length of six crop plants viz Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Medicago sativa, Trifolium spp., Raphanus sativus and Trigonella foenum-graecum, for initial screening of dominant allelopathic weed specie. In 2nd greenhouse experiment, plant debris method was used @ 1.7-6.7g of leaf debris of dominant allelopathic weed specie/300g of soil and examined their effects on germination percentage, root length, shoot length and root dry weight of four test plants, for further assessment of dominant allelopathic weed specie. All data was expressed in term of percent control. Fumaria indica showed a pronounced inhibitory effects on germination percentage at 20 and 30 mgL-1 aqueous extract followed by M. indica at 10 mgL-1. Melilotus indica halted the hypocotyl growth of test plant at 5, 10 and 20 mgL-1 aqueous extract followed by F. indica at 30 mgL-1. Radical growth of crop species was also stunted under M. indica aqueous extract at 20 and 30 mgL-1 followed by M. polymorpha at 5 and 10 mgL-1. Moreover, M. indica also showed negative effects on germination, root/shoot length and root dry weight of test species when incorporated at 3.4-6.7g of leaf debris/300g of soil and also proved that rate of reduction on studied parameters based on concentration dependent. It is concluded that M. indica proved a higher allelopathic weed specie that could be useful for controlling invasive plants and also as bio herbicide in weed management system in future.
