NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY AND WHEAT PRODUCTION IN RESPONSE TO NITROGEN MANAGEMENT PLANTED AT VARYING PLOUGHING INTENSITY
Sajjad Zaheer
Abstract
The commercial fertilization increased environmental pollution, thus a study was planned to optimize N sources and ratios on the N assimilation and productivity in wheat under three tillage practices i.e. plots ploughed once (ST), twice (DTP), and thrice (TTP) with 10 days interval. The ratio of FYM and urea were 0:0, 0:100, 20:80, 40:60, 60:40, 80:20 and 100:0 respectively to provide 120 kg N ha-1. TTP had higher grain yield (4299 kg ha-1), grain N content (18.33 g kg-1), total N uptake (100 kg ha-1) and 8% nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) than DTP. Sole FYM had reduced NUE, whereas sole urea had increased N uptake and NUE. The 60% urea and 40% FYM treatment had 52% higher grain yield and 75% higher total N uptake than control., and is therefore concluded that grain yield and wheat N assimilation was improved with intense ploughing and 60% FYM and 40% urea treatment.
