Abstract

In present perception of time there is a need to develop new compounds having huge therapeutic potential. Medicinal plants have been very intensively screened for their bioactivity in order to treat various disease and disorders in human. In the present study fractionated extracts of Petunia axillaris were evaluated for their bioactive potentials by using different polar and non polar solvents. Antibacterial activity was investigated by well diffusion method and n-hexane and diethyl ether soluble fractions showed maximum antibacterial activity. Significant hemolysis was shown by methanol soluble fraction which was (3%). Maximum α-amylase inhibitory activity shows by methanol soluble fraction 58%. The most active fraction showed inhibitory activity against pepsin was ethyl acetate soluble fraction 69% inhibition. Maximum clot lysis activity (32%) was shown by chloroform soluble fraction when compared with standard streptokinase (75%). Highest antioxidant activity was shown by 80% aqueous methanol crude extract i.e. (69%) when compared with standard ascorbic acid (69%). Results indicate that non polar fractions showed more bioactive potential than polar ones. Thus, bioactive fractions of Petunia axillaris exhibited good therapeutic potential and can be used for the medicinal purpose in future.
