Environmental impact of olive oil production in Sakaka City
Al-Hajoj A.M.
Abstract
Olive cultivation is an important economic activity in the Northern region of Saudi Arabia. The production of olive oil is also an important activity for the inhabitants of these areas. Olive oil is produced using different techniques such as three phase as well as two phase centrifuge decanter. The production of olive oil is accompanied by the emission of different pollutants, which threats the surrounding environment and may affect the biodiversity. This research aims to shed light on the risks of these emissions to the environment. The liquid and solid wastes are discharged directly without treatment. The organic loads expressed by chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) of the produced wastewater as well as the solid waste were different from two phase to three phase centrifuge decanters. The wastes emitted from the three phase centrifuge decanters was found to be higher than that emitted from the two phase centrifuge decanters. This supports the use of two phase centrifuge decanters for the production of olive oil in Saudi Arabia.
