Foliar micro-morphology of Monocot flora and its implication in Taxonomy
Siraj Bahadur
Abstract
Foliar epidermal micro-morphology of monocots taxa gathered from Pakistan was first time conducted with a view to elucidate their taxonomic significance. The aim of this study is to use foliar micro-morphological features in both adaxial and abaxial surface to develop a taxonomic key for the correct identification and delimitation of closely related and problematic monocots taxa. This study revealed the epidermal characters of the leaves that have not previously investigated and was conducted for the first time. A signification variation was seen in quantitative and qualitative characters by using Light microscopy. Diversity was observed in shape of epidermal cell, number of stomata, size, guard cell shape, anticlinal wall pattern. A unique variation was observed in the subsidiary and epidermal cell shape. Based on these micro-morphological features a taxonomic key was developed which help in the delimitation of the closely related taxa. In conclusion light microscopy of foliar micro-morphology can be of special interest for the plant taxonomist in the correct identification of complex monocots taxa.
