ALLEVIATION OF SALINITY EFFECT ON ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L) VARIETY SONHAL BY THE EXOGENOUS APPLICATION OF INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (IAA)
BARKATULLAH
Abstract
The present research was conducted to study the alleviation of salinity effect by the exogenous plant growth regulator hormone Indol-3-acetic acid (IAA) on Abelmoschus esculentus Var. Sonhal. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design. The treatment of NaCl salinity was consisted of three levels viz; 100 mM, 200 mM, 300 mM and 0 mM of salinity was regarded as control. Three levels of IAA were 200 ppm, 400 ppm and 600 ppm and 0 ppm as control used in the field experiment. Altogether, there were 28 treatments replicated thrice. The NaCl salinity was applied before sowing and plant growth regulator sprayed at the time after appearance of leaves. The results revealed the maximum germination percentage (93.33%) and number of leaves (4.66) at control level before IAA application. Exogenous application of IAA on plant height showed mean highest value (10.75 cm) at 600 ppm. The mean highest number of leaves (5.83) were found at 200 and 400 ppm. The mean maximum leaf width (8.33 cm) and leaf length (6.83 cm) was observed at control level while mean maximum number of flowers (4.5) were observed at 200 ppm. The highest mean fresh and dry weight (24.75g and 6.1g) was found at 400 ppm. The highest mean water potential (0.32) was observed both at control level and 600 ppm. The application of IAA was very effective in increasing chlorophyll-a (0.51 mg/g) at 400 ppm, chlorophyll-b (0.48) at 600 ppm and the total chlorophyll (1.23) at 400 ppm. Similarly, proline, fats, proteins and different elemental concentration was also recorded high at 600 ppm, 400 and 200 ppm.
