Does seed number affect nutritional composition of Kinnow Mandarin?
Amjad Hameed
Abstract
Seedlessness is an important economic trait in citrus relating fruit quality and taste. The effect of seed number on juice quality in ‘Kinnow’ mandarin was analyzed. Fruits from four locations (east, west, north & south) of the low (1-5 seeds), medium (6-10 seeds) and seedy (11-25 trees were collected to determine the relationship of seed number with juice quality. The concentration of ascorbic acid, reducing sugars, total phenolics and color intensity of juice did not varied significantly with seed number in fruits. However, significant differences were observed in pH, fruit weight, soluble protein contents and total soluble solids (TSS) of low seeded, medium seeded and seedy fruits. In correlation studies, seed number negatively correlated with juice pH and reducing sugars while positively correlated with TSS of juice. Fruit weight showed significant positive correlation with pH, yellowness and tint of juice while negative correlation with protein content, TSS, blue and color intensity. In conclusion, low seed number did not adversely affect the nutritional quality of Kinnow fruit which can be helpful to introduce low seeded Kinnow fruits to attract consumers of both local and international market.
