NIAB GOHAR-A HIGH YIELDING AND BLIGHT TOLERANT HYBRID VARIETY OF TOMATO
MUHAMMAD YUSSOUF SALEEM
Abstract
Low yield potential and lack of hybrids resistant to blight disease are some of the major yield limiting factors of tomato production in Pakistan. Recently Punjab Seed Council has approved a local F1 tomato hybrid NBH-2 with name of NIAB GOHAR; the genetic purity of which has been confirmed by DNA based SCAR marker. It is 34% high yielder and moderately resistant to late and early blight diseases with fair degree of tolerance to fruit borer as compared to standard T-1359. NIAB GOHAR has high fruit firmness and nutritive quality than T-1359. It has wider adaptability and suitability for cultivation in fields and low tunnels. Being local hybrid, its seed production can be started on industrial scale through private public partnership in order to reduce the import of tomato seed and ensure supply of quality seed at low price to the farmers which would eventually increase tomato production in the country.
