NEW GENERIC RECORD OF SCOPARIA DULCIS L. FROM PAKISTAN: AN ALIEN ETHNOMEDICINALLY IMPORTANT PLANT
Shahid Ali
Abstract
Scoparia dulcis L. is commonly known as sweet broom weed and belongs to family Scrophulariaceae. S. dulcis is native to tropical America and now distributed in other tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The present study reports the abundant occurrence of S. dulcis in Jhok Reserve Forest, Lahore, Pakistan for the first time. The plant is highly used as a folk medicine to cure different problems like diarrhoea, cough, infection, kidney stone and diabetes in different parts of the world like India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Like other ethno-medicinally important plants, S. dulcis is also moving to its extinction due to unwise collection and the least care and thus needs some serious efforts to conserve it.
