ASSESSMENT OF PHYTOCHEMICALS AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE STEM BARK OF MORUS ALBA L.
SHER WALI
Abstract
The present research was performed to investigate phytochemicals and antimicrobial activities in the stem bark from Morus alba L. The results of phytochemical tests on crude extract showed that seven metabolites are present including saponins, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, free amino acids/proteins, carbohydrates and steroids. However cardiac glycosides, terpenoids and tannins were not noticed. Saponins were found maximum amount (19.90%) and steroids the minimum amount (2.30%). Five solvent extracts i.e. Aqueous, Ethyl acetate, n-hexane, iso-butanol and methanol were prepared for the antimicrobial activities. Six species of bacteria including four (04) gram negative species (Citrobacter freundii, Shigella sonnei, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Vibrio cholerae) and two (02) gram positive species (Bacillus cereus and Enterococcus faecalis) were selected to be used in the antibacterial activity. For anti-fungal activity five fungal species were selected which included Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium notatum and Trichoderma harzianum. Remarkable inhibitory antimicrobial activity was shown by most of the extracted samples against the tested organisms compared to control. Ethyl acetate and Isobutanol extracted samples were found effective only against E. faecalis.
