Abstract
Abstract
Medicinal plants have been playing a vital role in medicine discovery as well as in treatment of various diseases in different cultures since prehistoric time. These plants have various kinds of essential constituents which are used traditionally and clinically as medicines in China and other parts of the world. Artemisia, one of the largest genus, possesses a variety of medicinal species and are the attention of most of the researchers due to their chemical and biological diversity. Artemisia species, distributed throughout the world, possess various kinds of phytochemicals, essential oils and bioactive molecules used for the treatment of different diseases such as cancer, malaria, hepatitis and other microbial infections related to humans and animals by pathogens i.e. Bacteria, fungi and viruses. Based on recent researches, the effort exposes a detailed review of anticancer and antimicrobial activities of different species of genus Artemisia. This will help out the pharmacists to let them know the therapeutic values of phytochemicals, essential oils isolated from the species of genus Artemisia, which may be used in developing anticancer and antimicrobial drugs.
