Abstract

In this study, relationships between traits with yield and yield attributes in pearl millet were investigated using a diverse range of genotypes .The results showed that strong positive significant genotypic and phenotypic correlations were observed between grain yield per plant and plant height, spike length, spike girth, biomass, harvest index and panicle harvest index in parents and number of productive tillers, harvest index and panicle harvest index in crosses. Grain yield per plant has negative association with days to maturity in parents. Genotypic and phenotypic path coefficient analysis revealed that plant height, spike length, spike girth, biomass, harvest index and panicle harvest index in parents and number of productive tillers, harvest index and panicle harvest index in crosses exhibited positive and significant association with yield per plant both at genotypic and phenotypic levels. Based on the present results, it could be concluded that the number of productive tillers, plant height, spike length, spike girth, biomass, harvest index and panicle harvest index could be identified as the most important characters that are associated with yield, and therefore can be used for direct selection to identify genotypes with high grain yield.
