COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FLORISTICS, FREQUENCY AND VEGETATIO-BIOLOGICAL SPECTRA OF MURRE-KOTLI SATTIAN-KAHUTA NATIONAL PARK, PAKISTAN
WASIM AHMED
Abstract
The present study was aimed at Raunkiare’s floristics, frequency and vegetatio-biological spectra of vescular plants distributed in 246 sampling sites using quadrat methodology from Murree-Kotli Sattian-Kahuta National Park, Punjab, Pakistan. The study area is situated between 33º 21′ to 34º 01ʹ N latitudes and 73º 11ʹ to 73° 38ʹ E longitude in District Rawalpindi, Pakistan having a total area of 934 Km2. The study area was dominted in terms of its life form by therophytes (31.25%), followed by hemicryptophytes (28.13%). Microphyll was the dominant spectrum (32.10%), while mesophyll was the least representative leaf spectral class (13.07%). In floristic spectrum, each species were given the equal weightage, whereas, frequency spectrum was calculated based on each species frequency. In vegetation spectrum, number of individuals of a particular life form class was used. The spectrum was significantly different from Raunkiare’s normal spectrum showing domination of phanerophytes under the representation of therophytes. Homogeneity analysis showed a significant difference between the futuristic life spectra from the vegetation life form spectra. This study revealed that Raunkiaer's life form classification failed to explain biological spectra of some plant communities, and therefore recommends the floristic life-form spectra that may correctly explain the existing climatic conditions of the studied vegetaion. Besides, it is suggested that the vegetation spectrum requires the meticulous physiognomy coupled with ecological factors if worked in smaller areas to be deliberated.
