Assessment of Physico-chemical Parameters in Ferozpur stream of Kashmir Himalayas: Towards understanding the present status
Jahangir Ahmad Dar
Abstract
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the physico-chemical parameters and their dynamics in the Ferozpur stream of Kashmir valley. The investigation revealed that the dynamics of physico-chemical parameters depends on both autochthonous and allochthonous inputs and interactions taking place in the stream. This study aimed to analyze the stream at various locations (sites) based on the physico-chemical parameters as most of the water bodies in Kashmir Valley have become the main pollution sites due to the encroachment of land nearby the rivers, streams and lakes as well. The present investigation covered six different sites of the Ferozpur stream with each site approximately 4km from other site to perform the analysis, and based on the observations it was found that the site VI (Magam) is more polluted as compared to rest of the sites due to the accumulation of more calcium and magnesium by anthropogenic pressure. This study will help in knowing the present status of the Ferozpur stream and will pave the way for the community to take measures for managing the said stream of the Valley.
