IMPROVEMENT THROUGH HYBRIDIZATION FOR HEAT TOLERANCE IN COTTON (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Saifullah Abro
Abstract

Ability to the combination of cotton genotypes were estimated by a line x tester method among nine hybrids along with their 3 testers (male) and 3 lines (females) under two sowing regimes in field condition. The trial was conducted in RCBD design with three replications during 2014. Result revealed that CRIS-342 and NIA-Perkh could be placed in high CMT-high GCA group under both regime, therefore, could be reckoned as suitable parent in breeding programs aimed at improving CMT in cotton. The RCI ranged from 42.0 to 78.0%. Among the cotton varieties NIA-Perkh, CRIS-342 and CRIS-134 had the lowest relative injury level (higher cell membrane thermo stability). The four combinations NIA-148 X CRIS-342, Haridost x CRIS-342, Sohni x CRIS-134 and NIA-148X NIA-Perkh had negative RCI% value, proved to be the best for RCI% and indicates heat tolerant hybrids (based on CMT). Among the parent NIA-Perkh and CRIS-342 and Sohni displayed the positive GCA result for the trait bolls/plants and seedcotton yield which indicate that the traits was control by additive genes. Genotypes NIA-Perkh, CRIS-342 and CRIS-134 which gave the lowest value for heat susceptibility index (HSI). Among the nine crosses, five crosses HariDost X CRIS-342, HariDost X CRIS-134, HariDost X NIA-Perkh, NIA-148 X CRIS-134, Sohni X NIA-Perkh gave the lowest value for heat susceptibility index (HSI).
