The Elemental, Nutritional and Pharmacological Investigations of Desmodium podocarpum
Inam Ullah
Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to screen the crude methanolic extract (Crd. MeOH Ext.) and various fractions of rhizome, stem and leaves of Desmodium podocarpum for elemental, nutritional analysis and various pharmacological investigations. The elemental analysis showed that Magnesium (Mg) and Calcium (Ca) were present at higher concentration (98.25 and 72.14 mg/L) while the percent nutritional status was; carbohydrates (71.9), protein (2.1), moisture (4.1), ash (3.1), crude fiber (1.8) and fat (0.8). The ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and aqueous fractions of rhizome showed good activity against Serratia marcescens (66.66%) and Salmonella typhi (60%). The Crd. MeOH Ext. of stem showed good antibacterial activity against S. typhi, Chloroform (CHCl3) fraction against Staphylococcus aureus (65.35%) and S. typhi (70%) and EtOAc fraction against S. typhi (60%). The CHCI3 and EtOAc fractions of leaves showed significant (80%) and good (75%) activity against S. typhi. The MIC50 of EtOAc fraction of leaves was 0.8 mg/ml against S. typhi. The EtOAc and aqueous factions of the rhizome were found significantly effective against; Alternaria alternate (80%) and Fusarium oxysporum (90%), respectively. The n-hexane fraction of the stem significantly inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus (88.88%). The CHCI3 fraction of leaves showed good phytotoxicity at against Lemna minor L at higher concentration. The n-hexane, CHCI3 and EtOAc fractions of rhizome showed weak haemagglutination activity at 1:2 dilutions against; A+ive, AB+ive and B+ive and AB+ive, O+ive blood groups, respectively. The EtOAc and Crd. MeOH Ext. of stem also showed weak activity against A+ive and O+ive. The aqueous fraction of rhizome significantly affected the percent seed germination and the shoot and roots lengths of the seedlings decreased in a concentration dependent manner and also affected the dry weight and moisture consents of the seedling.
