EVALUATION OF IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF PERUVIAN MEDICINAL PLANT EXTRACTS

Blanka Svobodova
Abstract

In this study, ethanol extracts from sixteen medicinal plants, used in Peruvian traditional medicine, were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant effect using DPPH and ORAC tests. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined. The extracts of Caesalpinia spinosa, Calycophyllum spruceanum, Naucleopsis glabra, and Pterocarpus rohrii showed the most promising results with IC50 values ranging between 3.50 – 11.87 μg/mL in DPPH test and 1.84 – 2.11 g TE/g in ORAC assay, respectively. Furthermore, the C. spinosa, C. spruceanum, and P. rohrii extracts were found to contain considerable amounts of phenolic compounds (ranging from 110 to 123 mg GAE/g). All of these species might be regarded as promising leads for discovery of agents with antioxidant potential. Further research should be focused on their possible use in treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases.
